Characters:
Kinamisa - Jinjin'tau huntress
Atreyu - Kivuli lord
He'd just come from checking on his sister and well... the gesture had left a dark scowl upon the lords face. Ever since his white sisters death as children, the result his drooping ear, from the hyena Attie has been every protective of his baby sister Khammy.. even since she survived her weak childhood. He always blamed himself when he was younger for his other sisters death, for not being big enough to save her from the hyena, and he continued to blame himself even just a little to this day. But how do you save someone from something thats eating away at them from the inside out? The pale lord sits along the mountain base, golden eyes staring off into the rising sun as it reaches into the sky. He's still, very quiet, thoughtful, and yet his eyes betray his extreme sadness; ears tucked back into the ranks of his alabaster mane.
While sorrow seems quite present in those native to Kivuli, some confusion seems to easily echo it in the visitors from Jinjin'tau. Kinamisa, the quiet huntress, had only just the previous night had a chance to speak to the King of Kivuli, Mizuka. However... it wasn't exactly what you would call a pleasant conversation. While she had said what she needed to, it left her with many questions, and more than a little insecurity about the new king, and the future. So, after waking far too early in the morning, she chose to spend her time walking near the mountains, trying to lose her feelings in the new surroundings. That, of course, is when she spots the form of Atreyu in the distance. Something is wrong... her instincts tell her that much. There is no happiness in the pale lion as there was in her past meeting with him. So... she's cautious. Slowly, she approaches without being intrusive, staying quiet but giving only a quiet, questioning sound, with a hint of concern.
A single ear twitches and the male's gaze is torn from the sky as his head turns to regaurd the noise behind him. Golden gaze settles on Kinamisa and Atie allows a small smile to grace his features. "Good morning Kina'," he chuffs softly, tail tapping at his hidquarters, "What are you doing up so early?" The lord shifts his weight around to face her better, shaking his bangs from his face as he does so. He plasters a soft cheery smile upon his face but those golden orbs speak differently about how he feels. Atreyu however is not one to let others see him show anything but rebellious cheerfulness. He gestures to the grasses beside him as an invitation for her to sit with him before he reguards her once more with a questioning smile.
"G'morning." The lioness replies in kind, although her voice is kept soft in the still morning air. For all her usual ease at taking people for face value, Kina has doubts about that smile on Atreyu's face. "Couldn't sleep." She replies, nodding a little. "Too much on my mind, I guess." She raises an eyebrow at him, and then tilts her head subtlely. "Seems the same for you?" Questioning, but gently so, the lioness approaches slowly and eventually settles in the invited spot, still looking at him with conern. She had her own misgivings, certainly, but it is clear to her that there is more going on in these lands than is visible on the surface.
Atreyu ahs softly and nods his head in agreement, "Yeah.." The lord lets his gaze drift elsewhere and he inhales slowly. He's quiet for a few more moments before he seems to snap from his trance and glances back to the lioness at his side. "So what's plaugein your mind kid?" he questions casually, head canting to one side. "Maybe I can help you with something, questions, uh.. that kinda stuff." He chuckles slightly, smiling widely and flipping his ears fowards in interest.
Respectful of his thoughts, Kinamisa is silent for a time, until he speaks again. She gives him a bit of an odd look when she's refered to as 'kid'. She may be young, but she's nearly at full growth. Still, there were better things to talk about than making an issue over such small things. "I spoke to Mizuka last night." Instinctively, she kneeds at the ground slightly, but then pauses and sighs to herself. "He seemed... preoccupied. Like you are now." She looks again at the lion, her ears folded backwards. "And in quite a rush to get back to the main cavern." She doesn't ask any questions directly, but there is certainly a tone of inquirey there, as if subtlely asking 'would you happen to know why'?
He listens quietly and his ears twitch back for a brief second before rotating fowards once more. The question about his brother's hastiness and seeming preoccupied get a soft sigh from the pale lord and he directs his gaze elsewhere. "In Kivuli, Kinamisa, family is extremely strong. As it is anywhere, and in any pride.. Our family however has never been perfect. When we were cubs there was a horrible flood and we thought my baby sister Khamisa wouldn't make it due to her increasing weakness. She survived.. weak, but alive. When we returned home, there was a hyena attack.." his nicked and drooping ear twitches, "My other sister and I were out byourselves playing. We never saw it coming, and I wasn't big enough yet to protect her and my father was too far away. The hyena killed her.. she never had a chance." The lord pauses before continueing, "In our adolesence, right when Mizuka was deemed able to take the throne, both our mother and father passed away from sickness.. it was just the three of us. Me, Mizuka, and our ever fragile yet living sister Khamisa." He smiles a sad smile as he glances back at Kina, "She's sick.."
"I wouldn't say family is that strong in -all- prides." Kina shakes her head, knowing quite well the ill feelings and sometimes outright backstabbing that can take place within a pride. However, she silences quickly enough to listen to the story of the floods. She is a good listener, this one, as that is what she did most of her life... just listen as others talked of not only their plans, but their plans for her as well. Her ears fold downward wincing slightly, as if she were seeing in her mind's eye the image of Atreyu's sister being killed by the hyena. "I'm sorry." She finally speaks. "I didn't know." She pauses, looking down at her pale paws. "I wonder why Mizuka ever agreed to all of this, especially with everything going on here."
He noses her shoulder gently and smiles, "No need to be sorry.. what is done is done hm." He shifts his gaze elsewhere before blinking to her. "For his pride. Mizuka loves Kivuli.. and we didn't know Khamisa was going to get as ill as she has so fast or right when your party arrived." He murmurs, "Be patient with him.. Mizuka is a good King and he cares about those here... but no one wants to loose their baby sister..." he rummbles, voice cracking very slightly. The pale lord shakes his head before clearing his throat and turning his head into a faint breeze that ruffles his bangs.
For the first time since arriving in Kivuli, Kinamisa begins to have her doubts about her own perceptions. Her first reaction to the gruff king was that he cared little for others than himself, and certainly didn't seem to care much for the visiting party from Jinjin'tau. Still... she can't really imagine what it must be like for Mizuka, or Atreyu, to be worrying over their sister's health. "I understand." She replies softly, trying to give a faint smile towards the pale lord. "But I worry for our princess, for us." She has known the Kivuli such a short time, and her priorities still lie with her own people... even if her mind is starting to sway. "Mizuka said... that he has little duties in ruling Kivuli to share with our princess. His words... confuse me." She frowns slightly. "It seems... unfair to take her, to take us from everything we knew, only to make her a figurehead."
Listening patiently the lion frowns softly before shaking his head, "I'm not sure about that one, you'd have to take it up with him personally. Mizuka seems like a distant fellow.. but he's really a caring lion." Attie understands her worry for her princess and those that arrived in Kivuli from the Jinjin'tau, he couldn't expect any less, however he knows Mizuka would have a reason for anything he says to them. He was a smart lion, he wouldn't say something that vauge or rather harsh without a reason. The lord blinks from his thoughts and he curiously regaurds the lioness at his side once more.
Of course, there is more to it than what she feels she can say in words. While still young, Kinamisa is neither blind nor nieve, she knows quite well about the relationship between Sammar and Ndalia, and just what trouble it could cause if it comes to light. Luckily, Kina is a good secret keeper. "You trust him... with your life, with our lives?" She asks, and there is a real questioning tone to it, as if looking for some re-assurance. Afterall, she is a huntress, no diplomat trained to hide worries and emotions. "I worry in chosing a companion for politics and not... not of the heart." She touches her paw to her chest slightly, and then looks over at Atreyu, as if seeking some understanding. "But I guess that's one of those choices out of our paws to control..."
The pale lord nods his head affirmatively, "I trust him with everything," he murmurs. He listens to her quietly before chuckling softly, "I never said I agreed with how he picked his queen.." he rummbles. "But Mizuka and my sister have always been more professional in terms of 'royal' things," he shrugs a shoulder. "Mizuka knows what is he doing and I'm sure he'll care for your princess. Just right now.. he hasn't had the time to stop worrying about Khamisa.. we all feel helpless.." He eyes her a moment before giving her a serious look, "Chosing a companion for your heart is never something out of your control. Ever."
Kinamisa opens her mouth as if to argue something, but then holds back, nodding slightly. The question that floats in her mind is this: Can you be mates, without being lovers? And that is the question she struggles with in trying to understand Mizuka and Ndalia and how they will rule together. And how will matters of state, and matters of the heart resolve themselves. Still, such questions can only be answered in time. "You're right. We all feel helpless." She agrees, but then looks over at him once more. "But it doesn't mean we are helpless, right? I mean, we get along. Maybe given enough time, everyone else will, too?" She's -trying- really trying to look on the bright side, but it's hard knowing all the darkness that lies between.
Atreyu shakes his head, "No that doesn't mean you are helpless. We do get along, your a pleasent lioness," he rummbles, "I'm sure given time.." the lord drawls slowly, smileing at her and giving her his trade marked crooked smile that matches that floppy ear. The scruffy lord stretches his paws, toes splaying before he shifts his weight to get more comfortable, tail tightening around his paws. Attie murmurs to the distance, to Kina' but almost more to himself, "Everything will work itself out."
"Given time, huh?" Kina responds with a faint tone of amsuement in her voice, seeming to rise from her own inward thoughts and instead responding to the hear and now. She eyes that crooked smile, and reaches a paw up to bat at the matching floppy ear. "Silly lion." With musical laughter in her voice, the girl nudges at his shoulder playfully. "You certainly aren't like any royal I've ever met, you know that?"
The pale lord oofs faintly as he trys to duck his head away from her attack at his ear and laughs audibly. "Me?" he questions jokingly-shocked. He finally nods his head and grins, "I hear that a lot actually.." he rolls a shoulder, "I guess I was the broken one in the litter. My other siblings turned out fine with the royal standard," he laughs. Atreyu seemed to have been born with his fathers rogue-like qualities before becoming King. Attie lifts his shoulders in a high shrug before smiling faintly, "Never heard any problem with it though."
"I can imagine." She replies with another of those amused laughs, but then shakes her head a little bit. "I don't think you're broken, though." Kina stretches her forepaws outwards, pulling with her haunches a bit before settling again, half-lounging on her side. "My father was a king, once. De-throned long before I was born. It doesn't make me any more regal just because of that blood. I suppose the same works in opposite?" She honestly doesn't know, as all the royalty she'd known in Jinjin'tau were certainly the 'royal standard'. "Did you never want to be a king?" She asks, curiously this time.
Atreyu shakes his head at her question and nahs, "I've never had any interest of being a King." Indeed he didn't. There was a moment in time where some thought Atreyu would have to be King but Mizuka returned to the battlelines stronger then before and Attie happily stepped out of his way. The lion shifts to get comfortable before nodding out to the rest of Kivuli. "On a better day," one where he isn't weighed down so heavily with worry for his sister, "I'll take you out to see the rest of Kivuli."
"I never had any interest in being huntmistress." Kinamisa replies, as if echoing the same sort of sentiment. "But the King decided that I'd be trained for it, and in Jinjin'tau... you don't argue when the King commands." Which is probably part of the reason she had mentioned not being free to love... especially if a King chooses who your mate will be. "I hope things will be different here." The comment is mostly said to herself, nodding to his offer to see the rest of the lands. "I'd appreciate the tour. Even if others do... I won't be going back." She lets her head settle on to her paws, her maw close enough for her whiskers to move against the lion's fur, but not close enough to touch.
Nodding his head slowly the lion smiles, "Then we'll plan that for another day.. until then I should be getting back to the cavern to check on Khamisa." The lord lifts his frame to his paws and turns to dip his head towards Kinamisa politely, "I'll see you later?" It's half a question and half a request. He enjoyed spending time with the Jinjin'tau huntress, she was nice and made him feel fuzzy in a not wierd kind of way. Attie smiles crookedly before flicking his tail from side to side.
The grey lioness seems somewhat disheartened when Atreyu gets to his feet, but at the same time she certainly understands that his priorities lie with his sister. So, she steels herself to keep smiling, not letting it falter even for a second. "I understand." She lifts her head just barely from her paws, nodding slightly. "Of course we'll see each other." Her tail curls slowly around her haunches. "Take care, Atreyu." In her mind, the lioness adds on a prayer... 'and may the kings of the past guard those you care for', but she keeps that silent plea to herself.
Atreyu gives her a soft smile, standing there for a moment, before turning and slowly wandering back towards the pridal cavern, tail swaying behind him. He worries for his sister, he worries for his brother, he misses Anyu, he misses his parents, but now he can't stop thinking about this interesting Jinjin'tau lioness. Attie rolls his eyes to himself as he steals a glance over his shoulder back to her before hurrying on to the mountain path. Well.. she was kinda cute....
