Wow dudes, I hadn't meant for this to turn into a "let's all gripe about the dead game" thread. I like(d) my characters, I like you guys, I like RPing, and although I don't have as much time as I once did I'm still down for playing if others are. No single person is to blame for how inactive the game is, and it can't possibly be the fault of anyone who EVEN NOW is trying to pull things together.
That said, back on-topic: If you guys decide to do a re-start but stick with the lion theme thing, I will likely bow out. This isn't a threat or anything, I'm just really not too interested in the RP-as-animals theme and my only reason for sticking around this long was Kamau and Kamau's friends, but Msasi's player has been gone for long enough where that later part isn't much a concern anymore either. If anyone is thinking of any other themes, however, there was a good group of RPers here and I certainly wouldn't mind continuing to RP with you.

Kamau's right, this is no one single person's fault. We all contributed to this and we should all share the blame.
Back to topic tough, the point about lion-themed thing is something I had been pondering on. I know that Sunrise offers players to play whatever animal they want to in Africa but, let's face it, almost everyone wanted to be a lion and, those who didn't, probably felt left out or something because there we so many lions. I'm not saying get rid of the lions all together, but rather find a way for a more balanced grid.
I would love to get RP going on the MUCK again, however my connection to there seems to be a bit spasmodic for some reason since I can connect to other MUCKs just fine. Despite that, we need to get /something/ done and /fast/ if we want this place to keep going.

There must be something in the water what with all the dying Mucks, boards, and Furcadia dreams.
In all honesty, I think what's occuring here is a major death of the rping world all together. Trust me guys, it's -not- just here that people are disappearing, leaving, or fading into the shadows. When I first started rping back in 98 there was a major boom of rpers that laster for nearly four years. But I've seen a growing trend of disinclination towards the rp world since late 02. That generation of people are growing up, Elim and I are testament to just that. We used rp as an escape from a world we would rather not deal with, but now that we're matured and grown up and found ourselves busy with many other things...RP just isn't the same.
I'm not suggesting anyone that still has a passion for it is immature or lacks growth. Not at all! I actually still rp. On one board. But only in my spare time, which is few and far between anymore. The issue with this generation of rpers I'm part of is more along the lines of time, interest, and well....time! The thing is, because Sunrise is a real-time rp style community, there's absolutely no way I can devote even an hour -every day- to keeping a story going (this is the same story I've heard from the majority of rpers that I once used to frequent with). I simply just can't do it. The only reason I still rp at all on the board that I do is the fact that it could be days, and even weeks between each post! But I can rest assured that the plot and story will only move as fast as allowed to and doesn't rely on daily character interaction.
The other major issue with Sunrise is this: the Lion King and the world it lives in is old news. There haven't been any new movies made, and there probably never will be. I don't even think "Timon and Pumbaa" still plays on Disney (though I don't watch Disney so I'm just assuming). This presents a big problem to the new generations of rpers. They don't have that TLK or African hook to draw them in. Sure you might get someone every once in a while that shows up, but it's rare, few, and far between. Even if you're focusing on a whole African based rp, there's still the issue that there isn't cinematic grab to the populace.
So what is there left to do? Well, you can be like KayFedewa on DeviantArt and create your own world, advertise it through impeccably created comic-strips, advertise it some more through Furcadia Dreams and lots and lots of free artwork (this does actually bring in a good deal of interest, I've done it, but it usually doesn't last. People just want free artwork.)
You can advertise your butt off at the Muck site posted earlier in this thread. It could work! But as it was stated, you've got to have something delicious to advertise. If people come and they've got nothing to sample...they aren't going to stay. This is where ideas and plots come in, but the biggest problem here at Sunrise is that most people have flown the coop (including me) from what I can see. A good deal of key characters from prides and groups and plots and family lines are gone, or at least have wandered off to something of more interest. This leaves you little left to do other than to *cringe* start anew.
From my own personal experience in running several rp boards, if you're going to start anew. Do it completely. When you bring in characters that already have vast intertwining histories and their own cliques, it is a huge deterrent to new rpers who desperately want to fit in and find a niche for their own characters in this world of so few niches left.
You've got to have an idea that hasn't been done yet, or at the very least an idea that's already got alot of popularity. I personally haven't seen many thriving African Based or TLK based rps anymore. They've all pretty much kicked the bucket. So what's left that's still going?
Wolf RP (I STILL find a crapload of wolf rp forums. I don't know how they're still going, but the appeal of a wolf just never seems to go away) Fantasy RP Anthro RP RP's pertaining to new Blockbuster cinematics or shows Original Story Line RPs (when done well and highly advertised, these tend to grow quickly)
Well, what if you really, really, really want to stick to African based rp? You've got to come up with a new, fresh, never-before-seen idea. That's the truth. It has to be so great in the grand spectrum of things that people are going to -want- to be part of it. An epic story line with lead characters that are open to be snatched up and not already taken by the staff and core rpers. Something that allows for a wide range of characters both in alignment and in species, but also demands for a good deal of interaction. Whats one of the best ways to see this happen? Add a bit of fantasy to the story. I don't mean magic and dragons and little pixies wandering about. I mean put it in a fantasy setting where reality as far as creature integration and interaction is thrown entirely out the window. I've seen it done successfully.
And if you don't want to start fresh? Well, I have to say that you've got to be open to the idea of change as far as your current characters go. Don't keep thinking about the Golden Age of Sunrise and "gosh, those were the days" because you're simply not going to get the same results today. You won't have the same people. You won't have the same character relationships, and you're sure as hell not going to have the same story lines to follow. In all truth, and as humbly as I can offer, you're beating a dead horse if you refuse to give up the old prides and old families. This is part of the reason I forced myself to give up on the Noctistellio clan because it stemmed off an old rp that had died and none of the original rpers were left. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get it back to the old ways, which is essentially why I showed up less and less and less until I just stopped showing up entirely. It just wasn't the same.
I know you might be wrinkling your nose at me seeing as how I wasn't a monumental being amidst all the stories and drama on Sunrise. But the point I'm trying to make is that I've been through the dying of old forums and boards and mucks more times than I care to count. It happens. Stories die off, people leave, interest is lost. My advice to you would be to start anew, possibly even with your own Muck (though I might advise against a Muck as most people don't have the time to keep up with them anymore). Maybe try turning Sunrise into a forum rp, a couple generations down the line, in an entirely new setting.
I hope my rant has had some useful advice. I'd like to say that I know I haven't been the most active of persons on the Muck for reasons stated above, but if you guys would like my help I'm always happy to offer it.

Well since no one has replied yet I guess I'll take the liberty to do it.
I have to agree with Val on all points here and I think she actually said what we were all thinking in the back of our heads (or maybe it's just me). If we want Sunrise to keep going, we're going to have to think of something and /FAST/.

ALright. I know I probably have no room to talk, I've been MIA for awhile now. Between life, school, work, moving, boyfriend, etc. But this is how I see it.. Currently, this Sunrise is dead. The prides are pretty much Moot unless someone gets active - and that doesn't mean idling in a room all day. It's been fun, its had a good run, but its run its course. It couldn't last forever ya know? I can see the understanding and logic in wanting to start over from scratch and also in not wanting to. Starting from scratch would be nice, new plotline, new characters. Somewhere where these no established 30 something year old pride and where no one is related to everyone else on the grid. However, if thats the route you want to go, good luck. It isn't just /here/ that's suffering keep in mind. I will helpw ith whatever decision you as the players make, but as far as me taking control of the situation - unfourtunately the time I have in the week does not allow this for me unless someone steps up and really /helps/. In which case, if I'm not alone, I'll be more then happy to assist anyway I can and do mostof the work if I hav eto. I'm not sure what the other options are, honestly I've glanced through everything in this thread because im sick and reading hurts my brain right now so yes... lay it on me. We need to figure this out. -Tilyn

I'm not very good with coming up with ideas and such, but I'm here for the duration. Whichever way the MUCK goes, I'll be there.
I may not be on much.. mostly since everything pretty much just stopped, but I still check in and would like to help in some way.

Were you in a newly created room or something, Vel? If it wasn't linked to the MUCK parent room, that've done that, I think.
